Sue has been layering and sewing to make art with non-traditional materials for as long as she can remember. To amuse herself as a child on long family drives through the Arizona desert, she would contrast her contemporary life in an arid environment by imagining she was swimming through prehistoric underwater landscapes of buttes, mesas, and strata. The desert’s geographic history, layers, colors, and textures became the inspiration for her series of constructed and stitched paper pieces, started while she was a student at the Kansas City Art Institute. Pieces from that series were exhibited in solo and group shows in Seattle, New York and Chicago and are now included in private and corporate collections. Three additional pieces were commissioned for the Tempe, AZ Courts building.
